Romania - Report

The first meeting of the GRUNDTVIG project – “A Sense of Being: building self-esteem”, entirely financed by the European Commission, took place at Ploiesti Penitentiary, Romania, in the period 02 – 06 November 2009.
The project developing over a period of two years has a consortium formed by representatives from 6 European countries, respectively Ireland – the project coordinator and Italy, Spain, Portugal, Norway and Romania – as project partners. The main objective of this project is to give back the self-esteem of prisoners.
During the first day of the meeting, the participants discussed about the similarities and differences between the educational systems in the penitentiaries and then a chess championship was organized for the prisoners (the bad weather conditions didn’t allow the organizing of a football game). The next point of the agenda included debates and exchange of experience on the methods used by each partner for giving back the prisoners the trust in their own forces and the chance to integrate easier in the society after liberation.

During the second day, the seminar “Education, sports, arts and culture activities in the prison” took place, where some of the cultural and educational activities developed in Ploiesti Penitentiary and outside were presented. In this reunion framework, a meeting with representatives of local authorities cooperating with Ploiesti Penitentiary and the foreign partners was organized. The meeting was very interesting and helpful for offering the needed self-esteem to prisoners, which in fact constitutes the primary objective of this project.
The second part of the meeting was developed with the project coordinator assistance, Mr. Brian Maguire, Ireland. The objectives for the next project meeting were settled. A proposal was to prepare a questionnaire commonly agreed by all partners, the document will address the target group and its results will be analyzed and compared during the next project meetings.
The project partners presented their own materials, of high importance, on paper or in electronic version. The materials included presentations of the activities developed by the partners, with a major contribution to this project implementation.

During the third day, activities regarding the preservation of cultural identity were presented and a questionnaire about the activity developed during this project meeting was completed by the participants, who received certificates of attendance to this mobility at the end of this meeting.
All the participants agreed that the meeting represented a good start in the project development and we hope that advantageous results will be obtained for all the participants at the end of the project and our work will be appreciated by all the people.
